Instruction from the football coach at Harvard 1894-1907 in an era when the coach could not call the plays. He played at Amherst College as an undergraduate 'roving center', elected captain, and at Harvard as a law student, elected captain. Named in Caspar Whitney's "All-America " teams in 1892 and 1893. Lewis later contributed a chapter on defense in Spalding's How to Play Football. Harvard alum Teddy Roosevelt admired his leadership and appointed the civil rights minded lawyer as an assistqnt US attorney for Boston.
