The Games of the 29th Olympiad were recognised around the world as among the best ever. They were the Games of Usain Bolt, with his three sprint gold medals and world records, and of Michael Phelps, who won eight golds. They also brought Great Britain's best performance for 100 years, with 19 golds among a haul of 47 medals that was bettered only by the hosts, the Americans and the Russians. As the Olympics closed, the Paralympics picked up the baton in spectacular fashion before Beijing handed over to London. This review brings together all the highlights from the iconic Bird's Nest stadium, the Water Cube, the Beijing velodrome and all the other venues. With first-hand reports and stunning photography, it also sets the scene for 2012, when the Games come to London.
