En 1540 comenzaron los primeros conflictos belicos, cuando los conquistadores espanoles al mando de Vazquez de Coronado se enfrentaron con los Zuni, y finalizaron en 1890, cuando la caballeria estadounidense masacro a la tribu de los Sioux liderada por Pie Grande en Wounded Knee.
