Cover text in English: Since the signing of the Arusha agreement, Burundi's judicial system is undergoing a major rebuilding process. How do local people perceive these efforts? Are the institutions well designed to serve everyone's needs? Do Burundians recognize in their justice system? It's from a "grassroots" perspective that this book answers these questions. Based on fieldwork stretching over several years, it gives voice to ordinary citizens. While exploring their underlying expectations, the book also questions the importance of extra-judicial conflict regulation, the phenomenon of legal pluralism and the way the legal system should adapt to its social environment.

Comment la population perçoit-elle ces efforts? Les institutions sont-elles bien au service de tout le monde? Les Burundais se reconnaissent-ils dans leur justice? C'est en privilégiant une approche "par le bas" que cet ouvrage répond à ces questions. A partir d'enquêtes effectuées sur plusieurs années, il donne la parole aux citoyens ordinaires. Tout en reconstituant leurs attentes sous-jacentes, l'ouvrage s'interroge aussi sur l'importance des instances extrajudiciaires de régulation, sur le phénomène du pluralisme juridique et sur la manière dont le système juridique doit s'adapter à son environnement social.
