Una dintre cele mai importante personalităti, care si-au legat numele de înfiintarea specializării jurnalism, la Universitatea de Vest din Timisoara, în 1992, este profesorul american Peter Gross, timisorean de origine, jurnalist si profesor de jurnalism, specialist în comunicare si analist al sistemelor mass-media din tările din fostul bloc comunist. În anul 2009, Universitatea de Vest din Timisoara i-a acordat profesorului Peter Gross titlul de Doctor Honoris Causa
