On June 15, 1786, Eberhardine Christiane Lotter (1749-1834), born in Stuttgart, embarked on an adventurous journey from her residence in Herrenberg. From Rotterdam, she led a grueling ship passage across the Atlantic to Charleston, South Carolina. There, she visited her husband, who had emigrated a year earlier, to clarify the family situation. After four months, Ms. Lotter returned to Herrenberg without her husband, where her experiences were written down in the "Description of my Journey to Charlestown." The present volume presents this text for the first time unabridged and with a comprehensive annotation.
