One of the most serious casualties of that first wave of violence was Odilo Alonso, a Spaniard who in the late 1950s emigrated to Cuba. They advised Odilo to return to Spain when Castro confiscated the farm where he worked. He could do it, but he said that if Cuba had welcomed him as a son, his duty was to fight for freedom. And he took his rifle and went to the mountains of Escambray. I remember the Spaniard Odilo Alonso, beat him in the head, bleeding from the ears ... Odilo Alonso woke up the next morning with a monstrously swollen head, never imagined that someone could have looked so grotesquely deformed. Armando Valladares. This autobiography is the denunciation in the flesh of the Castro regime and a terrible display of vexations and mistreatment. Likewise is the triumph of someone who has a great respect for himself--Provided by publisher.
