In 1674 a booklet "Het Podagra" was printed in Amsterdam. Its author, Herman Buschoff, a Dutch clergyman in Batavia, had suffered from gout (podagra) for many years. When he finally consulted a doctoresse from Quinam, she applied a few cones of a wool-like substance to certain locations on his knees and lit them with an incense stick. The effects were overwhelming and Buschof decided to make this marvellous remedy, which he called Moxa, known in Europe.
This book begins with a survey of Western knowledge about Moxibustion prior to Buschoff's book, followed by a biography of Buschoff, an extensive analysis of the contents of his book and the annotated text of the German translation published in 1676 in Breslau.
