The story is sen in 3 cities (Fiume, Vienna and Sydney) on 2 continents. It is a historical novel which covers the significant events of European history in 20th century. At the outbreak of WW2 the heroine finds herself starting a new life in Australia and the novel looks at a range of experiences of immigrants who settled there before and after WW2. The novel through Beatrice and her life, struggles with the issues of forgiveness and love,war and its victims, death, sorrow, separation, 'fate' and whether it is possible to make any meaning out of those experiences.
