In 1939, the Jewish German-French photographer Gisèle Freund (1908-2000) organized her first exhibition of writers' portraits in Paris. In the same year, the first European exhibition of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) followed in Paris. Freund manages to flee to Argentina in 1940. As co-founder of the photo collective Magnum, she worked throughout South America in the following years. In 1950 she is in Mexico for a lecture. She becomes close friends with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and stays there for two years. Freund sees Kahlo in a critical period, in which she undergoes numerous operations and ends up in a wheelchair for good. Freund's impressive photo series of Kahlo only came to light when her work was rediscovered in the 1980s and 1990s. Their relationship remained hidden.

In datzelfde jaar volgt in Parijs de eerste Europese tentoonstelling van de Mexicaanse kunstenares Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). Freund weet in 1940 naar Argentinië te vluchten. Ze raakt hecht bevriend met Frida Kahlo en Diego Rivera en blijft er twee jaar. Freund maakt Kahlo mee in een kritieke periode, waarin zij talloze operaties krijgt en voorgoed in een rolstoel belandt. Freunds indrukwekkende fotoserie van Kahlo kwam pas aan het licht bij de herontdekking van haar werk in de jaren 1980 en 1990. Hun verhouding bleef verborgen.
