Mostly set in the Jewish-American community around Maxwell Street in the 1920s and 1930s, this coming-of-age story is about Sam, orphaned at the age of eleven, whose struggle to survive leads him down a criminal path. The book has much of the flavor of a first-hand account of life on the streets of Chicago prior to WWII.
