History of St. Paul's church, Buffalo, N.Y., 1817 to 1888

This is a detailed history of the first Episcopal Church in Buffalo NY. The history is taken from the church's Vestry Minutes, which are the business records of this legally registered business entity.

There are many historic drawings of the first church, built in 1819. The second structure was designed by Richard Upjohn. The church burned in 1888 and was rebuilt and enlarged. Robert Gibson was the reconstruction architect. There are photos of some of the rectors during this time as well as photos of the church in later years. In addition there are several more chapters on specific parts of the structure and its interior decorations. There is also much information on their charitable works such as contributions to the US Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. The Charity Organization Society was founded in Buffalo by the Rev Stephen H Gurteen. There is a chapter on the Music Program which still has a formal Choir of Men and Boys. The Boys Choir was added in 1867 and is still vibrant.

The church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. It may well be the only House of Worship in Western New York State.
