A history of the Jews in Peru, beginning with the arrival of the converted Jews of Spanish or Portuguese origin. They were persecuted by the Inquisition at the trial of Lima (1639). Some of them were condemned and burned at the stake. The difficulties of Jews faced with the deep rejection of a prejudiced Catholic society are described. In 1869 antisemitic outbursts again spread in Lima owing to economic problems blamed on Jewish bankers.
