In recent years much has been made of the success of developing countries, particularly in East Asia, that have achieved rapid economic growth by manufacturing goods for export.
This volume looks at the experience of a number of countries which have tried to effect a similar transition. It combines case studies of five countries with an introduction that considers the overall context and conclusions. The book uncovers serious potential difficulties in maintaining the pace of manufacturing for export in developing countries, and shows that there is no simple relationship between import liberalization and manufacturing for export.
