This is a story set just before and during the First World War and concerns the struggles of a young shop girl Ellen Ramsden who falls in love with a man of a superior class and what happens to her and the men she knows, her brother, her lover and her friend who go off to fight in France and Belgium in this conflict. It is a tragedy but it is also a romance.
