Superintendent's report of the Eastern N.C. Insane Asylum, for the year of 1884
The fifth annual report of this African American insane asylum provides updates about financial affairs, necessary and potential repairs, and patient status. A primary concern was a proposed construction project for a Superintendent's house to be built near the main building, to provide additonal office space in the main building. Also includes reports on patient issues, including population movements, cures, deaths, improvements, racial differences in patient behavior, and the difficulty of retaining female employees. Several tables are appended to the report, and relay miscellaneous patient data, including causes for admission, form of insanity, duration of the disease, prior employment, age, and similar information.
