A visit to Norton Museum sparks James's interest in an important local discovery of mastodon bones, but he is even more intrigued by the strange behaviour of two men and a boy seen in the neighbourhood. When he and his new friend Emily help at the mastodon dig site, events take an unexpected and unwelcome turn, and they realize that the precious bones are in great danger.
