The Politics of Change explores the political, economic, and cultural issues involved in the disintegration of the former Soviet Union and the emergence of newly independent states. It examines Russia and other post-Soviet states as they try to develop their own identities as fifteen separate countries, as they try to develop their own market economies, and as they try to integrate themselves into an international system that is itself in flux.
Rather than focus on institutions and individual policymakers, the book focuses on the causes and meaning of change, thereby raising more general issues about the process of political transition.
