Yuchi Indians Indians Of North America Rites And Ceremonies

Dr. Lew Ballard gives an excellent overview of the Yuchi Green Corn ceremony as witnessed in the 70s. Comparing this material with Speck’s observations at the beginning of the Century and with observations made by Woktela (http://www.yuchi.org/), and Dr. Jason Jackson at the end of the Twentieth Century shows that these traditions have been remarkably stable. The Green Corn Ceremony is the heart of the ancient spiritual practices of the Southeastern Indigenous peoples. The Yuchi traditions are important because they are the mother “squareground” to all Southeastern tribes, and are often called upon today to rekindle the Rites at resurrected squaregrounds.
