Unless Victory Comes

Gene Garrison

Patrick Gilbert

Army Western Front Soldiers

On December 16, 1944, Gene Garrison spent a terrifying 19th birthday crammed into a muddy foxhole near the German border in the Saar. He listened helplessly while wounded comrades screamed in pain when deadly shrapnel from artillery shells rained down on them. The teenager was part of a .30-caliber machine gun crew with the 87th Infantry Division. It was his first day in combat. Unless Victory Comes relates the cold reality of war as seen through the eyes of the common soldier who saw it all, from that first frightening night in combat until the war ended five months later. - Jacket flap.
