Kromě zamoření jim v tom však brání pohrobci Staré války – postupně se rozpadající, ale stále aktivní autonomní bojové stroje a s časem degradující válečné umělé inteligence.

Matyáš Sanders je technik, mechanik, jeho prací je chránit ostatní před útoky nebezpečných strojů. Ve své práci patří k nejlepším a na základě vlastních zkušeností věří, že se blíží den, kdy bude planeta opět patřit lidem. Jako mechanik jednotky profesionálních žoldnéřů poskytujících ochranu dálkovým obchodním konvojům k tomu může sám značnou měrou přispět.
