TLDR:

Words cannot describe how beautiful the storytelling of this movie is. The art of this movie is phenomenal. Totally recommend.

STORY (NO SPOILERS):

You can see the summary of the movie on the website, but as someone who watched the film, I have to admit that it is incredible. It had its fair share of calm and intense moments, depicting their (particularly Mitsuha's, who is the female main character) mundane lives in plot-relevant ways that don't feel like a chore to watch - I know that it can get quite frustrating to have to sift to filler material that has no real pay off at the end.

That being said, it can also feel at times a bit jarring

CHARACTERS (NO SPOILERS):

  • QUICK VERSION: All characters get a pass.

Male Main Character (Taki)

He's a really interesting character. He is focused mostly in the second portion of the movie, though his home life is never really touched upon (at least from his perspective). He's the 'city person' of the pair, who lives in the lively city of Tokyo, and has a bit of an attitude. He's sporty (good at basketball), responsible (has a good job, seems to be alright at school, and values his finances enough not to spend recklessly), and doesn't let other people's opinions faze him/fights for himself (you'll figure out when he shows this when you watch the movie).

Best trait? He's not a pain to see on screen. I never sighed or wished to fast forward when he was around, and he overall didn't do anything that warranted me to dislike him (I don't mean to say he never fails/has no flaws, but that those flaws are handled well, and serve to make him a well-rounded character not boring/unwatchable).

Female Main Character (Mitsuha)

The female main lead is admittedly a bit more the focus of the movie, taking up the first portion of it and being a significant catalyst of the second, but even so never felt out of place. She's a great character, who is striving to find herself in the midst of her small country town. Yep, she's the 'country person' of the story, and her setting really warrants some stunning scenery and lots of memorable moments. She's kind (helping a fellow person in need), introverted (is happy not drawing attention to herself), and a surprising - but welcomed - adventurous/dreamer spirit (wanting to explore other frontiers outside of her home).

Best trait? She is also wonderful to see throughout the movie and serves well as a sort of foil for the other MC. Her personality never felt forced or 'fake' (as some anime tend to make some female MCs a tad unbelievable in their naivety and clumsiness), and she had a raw realness to her that was awesome to watch.
